  • Essay / Home education: the best choice - 1505

Where do you go to school? Which clubs do you belong to? What sports do you practice? These are all typical questions that teenagers ask during everyday casual conversations. Stereotypically, when the answer is simply that a child goes to school at home, they are often seen as a predetermined character as if they were a strange, underprivileged, unsocialized individual who knows nothing about life . The often received response: “Oh, you’re one of those people” is usually the norm. The following essay will dispel many of the myths associated with today's homeschooled students by providing statistics and support for why homeschooling is the better choice over public school education. Ironically, in the early 1900s, when our nation was evolving and becoming recognized as a true world power, we were doing so with individuals who were primarily educated at home or in a one-room schoolhouse. Children were also held responsible for their work, their actions, their successes and their failures. Children were not expected to spend countless hours roaming the crowded corridors of an overcrowded school, while absorbing themselves in the “busy” work assigned to them; similar to how public schools operate today. Today the system is broken. Policy changes such as “no child left behind” offer a ready-made solution to a situation involving children who do not learn from a “one-size-fits-all” mold. The example and example of the failing public school system would be representative of the exponentially increasing number of children converting to homeschooling. In 1960, homeschooled children numbered only 10,000 to 15,000 students, which increased to over a million children by 200...... middle of paper ......ng to homeschool their own child because they are unable to fix the failing public school system on their own. Homeschooling is increasingly becoming a way to address parents' concerns and provide many more options for students.
