  • Essay / Obesity Problems in America - 603

Every day, Americans die from the diseases they carry because of obesity. Many Americans eat too much because of social problems or because they are hereditary. Many projects have been discussed, but the problem is finding the solution. Junk food and unhealthy drinks have corrupted the minds of children across the country and putting an end to it could bring other benefits. Unhealthy foods and drinks should be taxed and healthy foods should be advertised more to help prevent obesity in the United States. In “Bad Food? Tax it and subsidize vegetables,” Mark Bittman suggests Americans should stop eating unhealthy foods so often. In the article, Bittman tells his audience that people suffer from "heart disease, diabetes, and cancer that are all largely caused by the standard American diet" (page 35). It also states that a healthy diet can improve the health system and save millions of lives. The big problem is that Americans eat unhealthy every day, but come up with a plan to prevent this from happening. Bittman is proposing new ways to help end unhealthy eating, but some of his ideas won't work. He comes up with the idea of simply imposing taxes on unhealthy foods and selling basic foods cheaply. This will not work because it would upset processed food companies as well as food consumers. “It would upset those who might be reluctant to pay more for soda and chips and would claim that their right to eat what they wanted was being violated,” Bittman said (page 36). Another plan suggested by Bittman is to subsidize basic foods. This idea would encourage people to use their health care and everyone would be able to afford healthier foods. "Direct subsidies to farmers for crops like corn and soybeans keep prices of many unhealthy products... middle of paper ...... school meals are the best because they teach children the right foods and bad ones. They could use these skills for future use. By teaching children across the country from an early age, we can increase the chances that they will not carry any disease in the near future. Having to eat so much is a problem and the authors have some great ideas to help prevent overeating. Americans all over the world need to stop eating so much because they are serving as role models to young people and young teenagers. A healthy diet is the most beneficial, despite how it tastes sometimes. Works Cited Bittman, Mark. “Bad food?” Tax it and subsidize vegetables. New York Times. July 23, 20ll.
