  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on Horse Racing - 2001

In the case of Man o' War, timing played a role in its popularity as well as its success. Man o' War is considered one of the greatest racehorses of all time. He began racing in 1919, just a few years after racing became legal again. According to American historical author Larry Schwartz, when he entered the world of auto racing, "attendance and purses were at an all-time high" (Schwartz). He won 20 of the 21 races he entered, beating most of the horses by incredible lengths. This was in the early days of horse racing; selection methods to maximize genetic success had not been developed and neither had training techniques. Man o' War was naturally talented, and the fact that he started racing at such a time had a big impact on his success. The combination of his natural speed and ability, combined with his timing, brought him national fame, success on the track and, as Schwartz says, "brought international recognition to Kentucky breeders and made states "United the world center of racing" (Schwartz). Other horses have succeeded for similar timing reasons. While they may not have entered an era where the methods were still being developed, their timing, while fortuitous, could have a large impact on their victories against others.
