    In the third century AD, the Roman Empire was thrown into chaos due to several civil wars due to the lust for power; many people were only interested in their influence, rather than acting for the good of the country. As the Roman Empire was constantly expanding and becoming more and more powerful, Diocletian, the emperor at the time, considered it too large to be ruled by a single emperor. The Empire was divided into two parts, the Eastern Roman Empire and the Western Roman Empire. The Western Roman Empire did not last long; it fell in the 5th century AD when it was conquered by barbarians. The Eastern Empire lasted for a thousand years before finally falling to the Turks. The Western Roman Empire was constantly in chaos and could not firmly establish uncontested government. When it fell, in 476 AD, the civilization had no central government to serve as its backbone.
