Several new technologies have been introduced to the ISS. Canadians studied neurosurgical medical technology on the ISS, which produced the NeuroArm, a tool for removing tumors from the body and performing other forms of neurosurgery. This device comes from the mechanical arms aboard the International Space Station. Another research contribution comes from Mexico. Astronauts used some water purification system to allow them to drink uncontaminated water. This system is used in some rural areas of Mexico, where fresh water is scarce. This system has helped poor communities live longer and healthier lives, without fear of water.
