In the play Man and Superman, George Bernard Shaw uses many ideas of the time to create one of the best romantic comedies of its time. In the era of realism, playwrights used many tactics to make their plays most realistic. "All plays have similar elements, such as that all plays must resemble real people in real scenarios, secrets known to the audience but not to other characters, and each individual act repeats the general action of the play whole." (Hompage.smc.edu) These elements are easily seen in the play, with twists and turns. Man and Superman is one of George Bernard Shaw's best plays, although long after the play's release it was never fully performed. . The play begins with an "epistle dedicated to Arthur Bingham Walkley, a friend of Shaw's for fifteen years." (Bartelby.com) Arthur is the main reason for making this Don Juan play because of how he questioned why Shaw didn't play around with this type of storyline. The dedication goes on to explain how "Arthur will recognize the play, how Shaw begins his plays by showing the Puritans the predicament of his contemporary English drama, he goes on to prattle on about certain aspects of life, which leads to how Arthur will react to the play, the epistle talks about other playwrights and how Don Juan's theme has lost its meaning, and ends with how he knows he will not be like the other playwrights. (Epistle Dedicatory, GB Shaw) The play, although considered outdated by Shaw, was not that bad of a play. Before reading the play, I thought it would be rather boring and unlikable; Turns out I was wrong and I really enjoyed reading the play, it was easy to understand and not difficult to follow...... middle of paper ...... the play Man and Superman by George Bernard Shaw is a comic philosophy written for a friend of fifteen years named Arthur Bingham Winkley. The play was very realistic as the conversations were either boring or entertaining. The period elements that also featured in the play were real people in real scenarios, secrets known to the audience but not to other characters, and each individual act repeats the general action of the entire play. The play was a great read and although I found myself bored in very few parts of the play, it was a selling representative of plays from this period. , No upload date, taken January 16, 2014Man and Superman, Shaw GB, written 1903, taken January 16, 2014Jones, Janie, http://homepage.smc.edu/jones_janie/TA%202/8Realism.htm, downloaded N/A, taken in January 16, 2014
