  • Essay / Sociological Imagination Project: Evelyn Rogers

The concept of sociological imagination is being able to look at something from another perspective in order to look at our own lives in a new way. To have a sociological imagination, we must look away from their situation and consider an alternative point of view. It is the concept of being able to see things socially and how they interact and influence each other, as well as seeing the general pattern in the particular, in this case, based on a period of time. I was able to apply sociological imagination through stories from the life of Evelyn Rogers in the 1950s and beyond. From her childhood until today, Evelyn has been part of the privileged upper-middle class families. I was at Rancho Solano Emeritus Assisted Living Center visiting my grandmother when I saw Evelyn in the cafe. She doesn't live there but was visiting a friend who does. Evelyn Rogers, formerly Evelyn Hendrickson, was born on July 17, 1949, to an upper-middle-class family in Swansboro, North Carolina. She was the youngest, having an older sister named Caroline, who was only a year older than her. Her mother came from a religious Christian family, she led the life of a housewife while her father was a general practitioner then, a few years into her career, she joined the Navy, which forced the family to move to the base at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he worked at the naval hospital. She admits to having had a privileged childhood, her family led a comfortable life in an upper-middle class suburban neighborhood. Of course, racism was at its peak, especially in the South. His neighborhood was made up entirely of white people who were of the same social class as his family. As a child, she and her sister shared mutual friends who lived in the same neighborhood...... middle of paper ...... and had to create their own network of friends over time and did not have relationships like those of Evelyn's parents. When my parents came from abroad, they couldn't bring the people they grew up with; they basically restarted their social lives. It was easy for Evelyn's parents to find her a partner through family friends, but my parents didn't do it so easily. Fortunately, after many years, my parents created a network of friends through their efforts. Additionally, Evelyn's paternal and maternal sides all reside in the United States, unlike me where my entire family lives overseas - she sees her family frequently and they are a big influence in her life, as for me, I get to see my family every four years when my parents plan a trip to Pakistan, and my extended family has little influence on my life; only my parents and my religion influence me.
