  • Essay / War, Realism and Constructivism - 1001

We must understand why war is such a recurring event in the history of nation-states, as well as the nature of international affairs and the determining factors that provoke action, reaction and cooperation. , hostility and peace between states in the international system. War has always been a conflict between countries using weapons. When nations decide to go to war with each other, millions of money are spent, and not only are money and materials wasted, but it also costs hundreds, if not millions, of lives. Then, most of the time, not only soldiers die, but also innocent people. Killing people for whatever reason, like power or race... etc., and then because nations don't think the same way and don't have the same worldview, is not correct. This is why peace is the contrast of war. Peace is mainly described as a quality that functions harmoniously and provides security to a society or relationship. This means that hostility does not exist, because the security of nation states and their international relations on social and economic issues are important, and equality and good justice are trustworthy. Bill Newman in his article “A Brief Introduction to Theories of International Relations”. Relations and Foreign Policy” asserts that classical realism is a theory of the state that holds that all states seek power and that states seek to increase their power; they want to diminish the power of their enemies; and everything they do is in the name of accumulating power. States view other powerful states as rivals because power, when not in your hands, is threatening. (Newman Poli 468) This means that states want the power to dominate other states because they believe that having...... middle of paper ... moreover, the norms have not prevented the United States to reach Afghanistan and Iraq and constructivism does not fully explain peace because most of its explanations rely on humanitarian intervention. Humanitarian aid does not bring peace. Why didn't the United States or Europe intervene in the genocide in Rwanda? We all know it was because the Americans had no interests, it was a small African country with no minerals, and most of the U.N. peacekeeping forces had been withdrawn from Rwanda. Constructivism is simply critical where other theories have failed to give the proper explanation and do not make predictions, and even according to Wendt himself who identifies constructivism as a tool of analysis rather than a prediction tool. Wendt (1992). Finally, constructivities forget that individual experiences and attitudes vary depending on the actors and that on the basis of “what?” but not on the “Why?” and the “How?”.
