  • Essay / Issues Facing Incarcerated Women - 1616

Over the past centuries, women have fought for their rights, from their right to vote to equal rights in the workplace. Women's resistance is the act of opposing those in power, so that women can have a voice in the world. Women in prison are often neglected. In the 1970s, the movement for the rights of women prisoners began and it continues today. The number of women in prison is increasing rapidly compared to that of men. According to Victoria Law, a prisoners' rights activist, she said the percentage of female prisoners had increased by 108%. This fight is important because women in prison are silenced; they are the most vulnerable people in our country (Siegal, 1998). Women prisoners have the highest suicide rate because they are not heard and have to deal with their problems alone. No one thought about these women and their problems until the prison rebellions and riots of the 1980s. These women face many problems such as medical neglect, sexual and physical abuse, and last but not least loss parental rights. The number one problem women in prison face is medical neglect. This is a fairly common problem that women suffer from when they are incarcerated. Initially, the prisoner was reserved for men and is therefore considered in various respects a patriarchal institution. Many men are stubborn and don't like going to the doctor. Women have more medical needs, such as reproductive problems due to pregnancies and infections. Many prisons do not offer regular gynecological exams; These exams are specialized services and take time to be approved. For example, a woman at Taycheedah Correctional Facility in Wisconsin suffered from endometriosis. She was not allowed to see a gynecologist... middle of paper ... years to protect the rights of these women. They defend people who have neither the voice nor the courage to speak. These activists discover problems and pass the information on to others (Chandler and Kingery, 2000). Many of these problems are brought to light through the media; many films and reports are created to tell the story of how their prisoners are mistreated. Books about real women were written to clarify and elaborate on the issues they faced (Kavenik, 2009). I think the best solution to end this problem is to get more people involved. Many of these women are nonviolent offenders, meaning they were sent to prison for fraud and drug crimes. There should be alternatives to incarceration for mothers, so that they can be involved in the lives of their children. These women do not deserve such treatment, these women are still human beings.
