  • Essay / Discourse Analysis of the Sandy Hook Shooting - 729

“The majority of those who died today were children – beautiful little children between the ages of 5 and 10. They had their whole lives ahead of them – birthdays, graduations, weddings, children of their own” (“Barack Obama”). This would instantly upset parents and older children. Who wouldn't be upset that five to ten year olds can't live their lives for whatever reason? However, even if Obama hadn't put any pathos into his speech, people would still be saddened by the fact that such a small person could never grow up because a man wanted to shoot up a school. Obama was not only worried about his country, but sad for those lost and the emotions were evident. There were times when he stammered over words, but that could be due to lack of time devoted to speech. This speech was not planned. This made the speech slightly wordy in some areas. However, there were times when he got choked up and if you watch the video of the speech, Obama even had tears in his eyes at one point. This proves that most of the slight mistakes made were due to emotional reasons.
