The ideas of the Enlightenment impacted the reforms of the French Revolution in many ways. These ideas, particularly in the political, social and religious fields, helped shape the politics of the French Revolution. The heliocentric view of the universe was created and replaced the standard geocentric view. The government and political views of the people were greatly influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment. For the first time, people began to question the Church and its teachings. Until this time, members of society had accepted the Church and all the beliefs it taught. The ideas of the Enlightenment brought new ways of thinking that did not exist before. The Enlightenment or “Age of Light,” as it is called in Gavin Lewis’s WCIV, gave way to new ideas that reformed the French Revolution. The scientific revolution challenged long-held views about the universe. Until this time, the Earth was believed to be the center of the universe or geocentric, but the heliocentric theory of the Polish astronomer Copernicus gave rise to a new perspective of the universe. The heliocentric vision explained that the sun is the center of the universe and not the earth as was long believed. The heliocentric view has caused conflict within members of the church community. Traditional views have been challenged and denied. Enlightenment ideas led to the rejection of the traditional views and customs of the Church. These ideas taught society to use reason, knowledge and nature as a source and to be guided. The Enlightenment brought deism and some even went so far as to believe in atheism. Philosophers of the time believed that "God's relationship to the universe was only on paper...and one saw the universe and its traditional conceptions." This new vision challenged and contradicted the ancient beliefs of the Church. Members of the church community were angered by these new ideas. Philosophers of the time began to question religion and the existence of God, which caused deism and atheism among the citizens of society. The government and the political views of the people were massively influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment. Many forms of government have been affected by these ideas. The form of government most influenced by Enlightenment ideas was that of Baron de Montesquieu, a Frenchman and admirer of the Enlightenment of the era, who believed that dividing government was the way to protect the freedom of the people and prevent a tyranny.
