  • Essay / Media Influence on How Beauty is Perceived in Society

The media has one of the most influential impacts on what is considered beauty in society (Bromley, 2012). Women spend thousands of dollars on products and cosmetics to achieve the unrealistic and unhealthy look of models in advertisements (Valenti, 2007). In the most extreme cases, women who feel that their unhealthy weight goal is not being met turn to extreme eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating (Cunning, 2011). However, despite the unrealistic framing of models in advertisements, women are still lured and pushed toward the “perfect” image presented by the media using race, youth, and sexuality (Bromley, 2012). Victoria's Secret "I love my body" lingerie campaign was criticized for this mission. The reason this ad was chosen is because of its irony. Akon's song "Sexy Bitch" supports the idea that women are viewed as sexual objects by men. “I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful” shows how being called a “hot slut” is positively influenced. Although advertisements may be considered harmless, it must be recognized that the media has a significant impact on a woman's life. self-esteem. Marketers use impeccable models in their advertisements in order to attract women and drive marketing consumption of their product. As women try to achieve their unrealistic body shape, they turn to extreme diets and eating disorders to achieve their goal. Even if these goals are unrealistic, women remain attracted to the media. The media therefore have a significant impact on women's health and self-esteem...
