    During the American Civil War, “more than twenty thousand women in the Union and Confederate States engaged in relief work…” (Schultz, 2004 ). These women had certain professional rights and responsibilities. to be maintained throughout the civil war. They broke common American Victorian tradition and volunteered to become Civil War nurses, which stunned the nation (USAHEC.org). These combat aides treated wounded soldiers and performed other tasks to assist the soldiers. , these women were not immediately accepted by male doctors in hospitals. Some male doctors believed that women were useless (Barton, 1892) and that they were “intruding on their domain and using up limited resources” (Freemon, 1998). Following the power struggle between doctors and nurses, nurses were soon nicknamed "the nurses, the comforters and saviors of men". (Barton, 1892). Shortly after the civil war began, both sides realized they were short-staffed for their hospitals. Usually, "a working woman was an object of pity or scorn in Victorian America." (USAHEC.org). Women generally devoted their lives to caring for their husbands and children; to create a nice, clean home (The History Channel Website, 2013), it was only in their home and for their family.
