  • Essay / On the Paternal Side of the Family - 1435

Summary of Paternal Health. From the information I gathered from my father's side, I discovered a recurring pattern of cardiovascular problems on my grandfather's side and drug addiction and diabetes on my grandmother's side. My grandfather Jerry and members of his biological family suffered from heart disease in his later years; However, my family members did not eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, or get regular checkups, which could partly explain their heart problems. On the other hand, after talking to my father and grandfather Jerry, I discovered that many members of the Patty family suffered from heart attacks but continued to live several years after their episodes, but how ? Maybe it's a genetic trait or it just wasn't the time to go; Regardless, heart disease is a major cause of death in my family and I will need to monitor it closely throughout my life. On my grandmother Mary's side, I see an overwhelming number of deaths directly linked to alcohol abuse, obesity and type 2 diabetes; this shows that their lifestyle choices were the cause of many of their health problems. As several members of Grandma Mary's family live on the West Coast, I have had no contact with them; However, my father told me that much of our family stayed away from my grandmother Mary because the health choices they made created stress on the family. Maybe that’s why I’m seeing a change in some of my father’s generation’s behaviors when it comes to substance abuse. On the other hand, in the case of my father and great-uncle Don, you see that their military involvement created many health-related problems...... middle of paper ..... .family members and this my theory is that depression had a lot of impact on the decisions made by my family members. When I put my mother's family and my father's family together, I see patterns in their behaviors that are directly linked to depression. For example, my 17 year old brother has been under the influence of drugs and alcohol and although he is young, if you look at my family history, many of my family members started abusing at a very young age, this which may become a recurring trend in my brother's life if he doesn't find professional help for his genetic depression. I hope that with the information from this project and course, I can share with my family and future children how genetics and health behaviors play an important role in what happens to your health, but what 'There is hope and a better way to deal with your depression.
