  • Essay / Mental Disorders: Blanche DuBois and Fernie Mae Rosen...

At first glance, the reader could not imagine a more incompatible and diverse couple than Blanche DuBois and Fernie Mae Rosen, two women from different backgrounds and positions very contrasting racial backgrounds. However, these two women share similar passions and mental turmoil, showing both their vulnerability to the world and their mutual personal energies. Both weave an alternate reality into their psyches that tricks them into believing that life is not worth it, and yet both seem to live their lives at various sexual and emotional extremes. Such compatibility shows the correlation between their mutual lifestyles despite incongruous contexts. Men always seem to be the source of their problems, despite their clear and noticeable negative reactions towards the opposite sex. The examples of a virginal aura that overshadows their sexual promiscuity, their mutual hatred for the world and the people around them, and their transformation from passion to full-blown madness show the reader that they have more in common than one might think. think. Fernie and Blanche has a particular effect on men, attracting them in one way or another without appearing interested in any romantic or sexual action; this paradox seduces many lovers who all subsequently feel a strange attachment to these women. A parallel can be drawn with the creamy whiteness of Fernie's mulatto complexion and Blanche's name meaning "white" in French: both women inherently possess the illusion of virginal virtue that overlaps with their blatant sexuality. The anonymous visitor from the North to Crane described Fernie's eyes as those that "desired nothing that you could give her...[but] men saw her eyes and were mistaken" (Toomer 648), creating a mass of men who, after having relations with her, became ob...... middle of paper ...... stood alongside those around them. Mental illness doesn't discriminate between gender, age, or social status, and it becomes abundantly clear that these two women are at a loss when it comes to securing a stable, healthy lifestyle. Fernie and Blanche encounter a common enemy in men everywhere, men who only wish to use them and abandon them, but in doing so become so fascinated by their charm that they end up destroying both women from the inside. Their passion is toxic, and yet both women seem to remain chaste and virginal to each new man they meet, starting the process again and condemning themselves entirely. In a perfect world, these women would not need to continue their affairs with men, but since they are both equally addicted to what is destroying them, the reader must sit back and watch them completely self-destruct..
