  • Essay / Comparison of Pop Culture and Old English Literature

There are simply two types of people in this world; good people and bad people. In Shakespeare's play Macbeth, the King of Scotland (at least at the beginning of the play), who is King Duncan, would be called a good person. Duncan is seen as the opposite of Macbeth, since Macbeth's characteristics are all made to be emphasized as a bad person. The story of Macbeth focuses on greed, power, and guilt. Macbeth becomes greedy when he kills Duncan to become king and gain power. Lady Macbeth, on the other hand, is struck with guilt over what she pushed her husband to do. Duncan's murder is extremely crucial to the story, as is his character himself. In our current society, Justin Bieber is a person whose actions and words are quite similar to Duncan's overall effect. Justin Bieber is similar to Duncan in the sense that they both speak very kind words to the people around them. Even as king, Duncan's vernacular might suggest otherwise. Duncan places the others on a high pedestal, speaking kind words such as: “O valiant cousin! Worthy sir! (Shakespeare I.ii.24). He speaks very strongly to the other person, just like Justin Bieber. In an interview with Ink Splot 26, when asked about Usher signing Justin Bieber, he said nothing but kind words about Usher, stating "how influential [Usher] is in life and how [Usher] takes pride in guiding me to become the best. the person I can possibly be” (Ink Splot 26: Interview with Justin Bieber). In addition to what they say, there is the tone in which they speak. Although both Duncan and Bieber have a formal tone, Duncan's tone is more superior and Bieber's formal tone has more of a slight street conversation tone. When King Duncan tells Ross to send the news to Ma...... middle of paper...... but feeling like he's getting something in return. If that were the case in the play, the results might have been simply different. Works CitedBieber, Justin. Twitter. June 29, 2010. the web. February 17, 2011. .Grigoriadis, Vanessa.
