Maya Deren was one of the most important American experimental filmmakers and entrepreneurial promoters of the avant-garde in the 1940s and 1950s. Deren is a multi-genre artist who is primarily known as a filmmaker but who has also worked in dance, poetry and film theory, paying particular attention to the materials involved in filmmaking and filmmaking. His films include multiple images of fabrics and textiles, and his writings systematically note the physical components involved in making a film, the instrumentation of the camera, the film equipment, and the bodies of the actors. For my final essay, I chose Meshes of the Afternoon. As well as being Maya Deren's most successful film. A mesh of the Afternoon is an experimental short film directed by wife and husband Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid. The film's narrative is circular and repeats a number of psychologically symbolic images, including a flower along a driveway, a falling key, an unlocked door, a knife in a loaf of bread, a mysterious masked figure resembling a Grim Reaper with a mirror for a face, an off-hook phone and an ocean. Maya Deren got her ideas from her personal experience, feelings and emotions. “The cinematographic image whose intangible reality is made up of lights and shadows projected in the air and captured on the surface of a silver screen appears to us as the reflection of another world” (Deren 2005e).
