    Currently, many Americans today benefit from government assistance, but most of them abuse the aid they give them. Many American families in the United States applying for welfare; dishonestly apply and use aid for purposes other than those for which it is intended. From my personal experience, growing up in Texas with my single parent mother, government assistance was necessary. Recently, the state of Florida passed a law that would require welfare applicants to submit to drug testing. A similar law was passed a few years ago in the state of Michigan, but that law was thrown out by the U.S. Supreme Court, which said it violated the 4th Amendment. The Public Assistance Drug Testing Act should have been federal law years ago because the drug epidemic has been going on for years; government aid was used for this purpose by some Americans. Public assistance is necessary to help people experiencing financial difficulties for a temporary period; however, restrictions must be placed on recipients. States should monitor benefits, provide diverse assistance, and monitor drug use. Many states, like Georgia, want to put a law in place, like Florida and Michigan, because the abuse of government assistance goes well beyond drugs. However, many support groups oppose this law and revisit the 4th Amendment. In the United States, more than thousands of Americans cannot afford to support themselves and are therefore seeking government assistance. Additionally, many people cannot afford proper insurance. For Americans on public assistance, one of the most important forms of assistance offered by the government is Medicare. Medicare is one of many controversial topics...... middle of paper ...... Florida's drug testing law was struck down just after four months by a federal judge in Orlando. Millions of people in the United States today benefit from some type of public assistance. Some Americans benefit from Medicare, which is for people who cannot afford private health insurance and people 65 or older. Another type of public assistance is TANF, which many families benefit from; an organization that helps families in need through grants and advice provided by the government. Some states take every step necessary to ensure that tax dollars intended for public assistance are used properly by people who actually need help and not to buy drugs or alcohol. These public restrictions are put in place so that people who truly need help to survive and want to live their lives with the American Dream in mind can have a chance..
