  • Essay / Anti-traditionalist educational philosophy - 863

When I become a teacher, I will adopt an anti-traditionalist educational philosophy. That is, I will reject traditions that have thwarted the critical thinking and democratic values that schools should instill in America's youth and focus instead on creating curriculum. Regardless of the curricular mandates imposed on me, I will teach what I think young people need to know. . Namely, I hope to inform my students about how educational administrations and governments manage, reform, and maintain public schools as well as alternative schools. Before citizens can make changes to an oppressive system, they must understand how that system of domination oppresses subordinates and perpetuates itself. However, schools are unlikely to openly accept subversive teaching units. For this reason, I want to introduce subversive ideas. For example, I will ask students what they expect to get from school besides getting a better job and I will ask them why and how they hope to become smarter by going to school. These questions may imply condescension toward school as an institution, but what is important is that students do not blindly accept that school is necessary. Additionally, I will constantly review my curriculum to ensure that my students can relate to the material. Each school year will require major changes and minor adjustments to keep the topics relevant to current issues and to improve on any mistakes I may have made in the past. In short, I don't want to just go through the motions of teaching, following the instruction manual provided by my superiors. Treating my program as a living, evolving text will keep it from stagnating, help me avoid assumptions about older information, and determine...... middle of paper ...... unique ability to serve as a role model for students. If the primary goal of schools is to transmit democratic ideals and inspire critical thinking in students, then teachers must embody these ideals and practice critical thinking. This means constantly analyzing all behaviors and always avoiding making assumptions about the curriculum and classroom exercises. Additionally, my students will trust my decisions and judgment when they perceive me as an expert in my field. For example, a person will trust a teacher's writing advice when the teacher has already published a book. Teachers who can create a professional persona will legitimize their role as authority figures or experts in their field. Additionally, students need to see their teachers play an active role in our local communities, especially those that directly affect the school community..
