  • Essay / Jamaican Bobsled News Reports - 773

Mass media in today's world is transforming before our eyes at a pace that cannot be stopped. The invention of the printing press truly marked the beginning of mass media. The printing press allowed ordinary people not only to produce newspapers, as this was now a simpler process, but also to read newspapers as the literacy rate soared as reading was no longer an activity reserved for the rich. Until the creation of television, word of mouth, letters and newspapers were really just the means of receiving information. Then came the computer. Eventually, newspapers decided to offer an online option through the Internet because of the ease of access not only for readers, but also for producers. Having an online newspaper allowed newspapers to compete with the news broadcast on television. Newspapers were finally able to broadcast record breaking news, like the TV broadcast, on the day it happened before the newspapers were even delivered to their destination. The transformation of the media industry is nothing more than a form of convergence to meet the demands of our modern 21st century society. With all the possible ways to receive information, one might wonder if the coverage is different depending on the media. On February 19, it is not surprising that media from all sources have numerous pages (both in text and online) and broadcasts about the Winter Olympics. Although the matches come to an end on Friday the 23rd, the press is still determined to cover as much content as possible. USA Today, The Telegraph (online news source), and The Today Show all reported segments regarding the 2014 bobsleigh team representing Jamaica at the Olympics. Although the three news source headlines for the reports...... middle of paper ...east, in the case of the reports on the Jamaican bobsleigh team, all articles contained the same information. That being said, it appears that the conflict does not vary in how one receives the news, but it is the actual experiences that vary. The news interpreter must decide whether they want a more hands-on experience with the written source, a digital option with unlimited possibilities, or the video delivery method where they will receive more content.
