  • Essay / Nussbaum's View on Philosophy - 1048

Nussbaum's main point is that philosophy should not only be used by elite philosophers, but should be made available to the general public. Philosophy has many other uses than a simple “intellectual/academic exercise” (Soccio). Philosophy is not just an exercise, but a way of life where one can integrate both reason and emotion. Nussbaum alludes to the fact that the unique skills of philosophy are intended to help us express our experiences, situations or emotions in a way that releases some of the unhappiness we derive from them, thereby guiding us towards a better life (Soccio) . In addition to being used to guide one to a better life, it can also be used to provide a way to free one's mind or emotions, while still being reasonable. In many ways, I'm doing the opposite of what Nussbaum recommends. I tend to view philosophy as primarily academic or rational and I tend to view emotions separately. This sometimes sounds a lot like my worldview. If one looked at the world with both reason and emotion, it would make more sense; a bit like philosophy. Nussbaum believes that you cannot have one without the other. I think mainly because you wouldn't get the full picture. The type of changes Nussbaum would like me to make to my beliefs and the way I love would be to not view philosophy as simply reason or simply emotion, but to view philosophy with a combined view of both. By doing this it could improve my beliefs, my way of thinking and my way of living. If we look at philosophy as Nussbaum suggests, with both emotion and reason, we can improve our beliefs. By keeping both reason and emotion in mind, philosophy can amplify our attention to universal moral values and encourage our willingness to uphold Fairne's morality...... middle of paper .... ..becomes very boring and there would be no belief. Our emotions are constructed from our judgments and beliefs, and our judgments and beliefs are created by our way of thinking which, in turn, is influenced by a certain philosophy. While I don't think I have done justice to the importance of Nussbaum's work, Vision of Philosophy or all the ways it has/will change my life, I have discussed three ways it has impacted by helping me improve my beliefs, improve the way I think, and improve the way I live. I even indirectly discussed how philosophy itself can be improved through Nussbaum's view on philosophy. I am not a perfectly ethical person, I am critical by nature, some of my beliefs could be improved and my way of thinking is not always clear. With Nussbaum's view on philosophy and philosophy itself, I was inspired to change these things..
