  • Essay / angola - 1922

In 1975, Angola was no longer a Portuguese colony. For the next 15 years, war raged as Angola's three groups fought for control, influenced by the Cold War. At the end of the Cold War, the United Nations will become involved in establishing peace. In Angola, the United Nations would succeed in UNAVEM I, but would struggle with subsequent missions to establish peace in Angola. The UN would make mistakes under its control, but would also fall victim to uncontrollable situations. The UN would learn lessons in Angola that would help increase its capabilities as global peacekeepers. The first UN mission in Angola would be called the United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM I). The mission would begin in December 1988, the agreement called for the implementation of a United Nations plan for the independence of Namibia, the withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola and measures to bring peace to the region. The main task of the mission was to oversee the withdrawal of all Cuban troops and their equipment. UNAVEM was to last 31 months, just one month after the deadline set for Cuba's withdrawal from the region. The mission went as planned and the Angolan-Cuban agreement was respected as written. The withdrawal will take place more quickly than expected, the 50,000 Cuban soldiers and their equipment will be completely extracted from Angola on May 25. The forces that made up UNAVEM will begin to leave Angola on May 31. The UNAVEMI Mission was a success, the objectives set were achieved without delay. UNAVEM succeeded because it did not monitor the peace accords but only the withdrawal of the Cuban army. The success of the mission can be largely attributed to the cooperation of the parties involved, who left the ob...... middle of paper ...... days of MONUA. The main problem the UN faced throughout Angola was that it was trying to combat a large problem with an easy solution. The UN was at a time when it did not realize how and to what extent its power could be used, nor what its real mission was. This would be the main problem in the failure to help Angola achieve peace. UN involvement in Angola would end with the UN leaving the country with no results in many years of trying. The UN would only succeed with UNAVEMI because the mission was small, feasible and had no fundamental problems. When the UN intervened in UNAVEMII and subsequent missions, it did so with high expectations and without realizing the problems that actually existed. The United Nations would leave Angola in the same state as when they arrived, far from peace..
