    An act of altruism is an act performed without thought of one's own personal gain. The movie What Dreams May Come features many examples of selflessness and shows how selflessness comes from love. The first of three examples is from the beginning of the film, just days after the death of Christopher, also known as Christie. The second example comes from a flashback near the end of the film, after the deaths of Ian and Marie's children, Christie and Annie. The last example comes at the very end of the film where Christie decides to stay with his wife, Annie, in Hell. This essay will identify and describe the three major acts of selflessness previously listed in the film What Dreams May Come. The first example of altruism comes at the very beginning of the film What Dreams May Come, right after the death of Annie's husband, Christie. Annie only remembers her late children, Ian and Marie, and now her recently deceased husband. Christie's ghostly conscience tries to help Annie grieve, but all it succeeds in doing is hurting her even more. After a few cases, Christie realizes that in order to help the woman he loves, he must leave her forever and leave his ghostly state. When Christie stops haunting Annie, he does so because he cares more about Annie's happiness than his selfish desire to stay with Annie. Therefore, he shows selflessness by putting Annie and her happiness before his own. The second example of selflessness comes near the end of the film in the form of a flashback while Christie was still alive, after the deaths of Annie and her own children, Ian and Marie. Annie had a really hard time coping with the death of her children, to the point where she self-harmed and was put... middle of paper ......th movie. The first begins after the death of Annie's husband, Christie. The second comes about three-quarters of the way through the film in the form of a flashback to when Annie was placed in a psychiatric hospital. The third and final act of selflessness comes in the very last scenes of the film, where Christie gives up his afterlife to stay with his wife in Hell. The three previously mentioned events show Christie in acts of selflessness, giving up his happiness for the one he loves most, his wife Annie. These actions all fit the definition of altruism, an act performed without thought of one's own personal gain. Altruism has been demonstrated by Christie repeatedly and throughout this essay.
