  • Essay / Animal Farm - 1024

The plot of “This report is a brief summary of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm.” The novel is set in Hertfordshire, the community where Orwell was known to have lived and where he wrote frequently. Orwell was an avid poultry farmer, so his understanding of rural and agricultural life seems obvious, but his view of government oppression and abuse is not as obvious. The layout of his house in the south of England served well as a backdrop to the old major's dreams. The novel was originally a children's story as the book follows the style of children's books. But like modern cartoons that must take into account that parents will watch with children, Animal Farm has sophisticated humor and wit and can satisfy adult audiences. Animal Farm can also be considered a fable because the characters talk about animals having human characteristics. Since animals think and speak, they are subject to the problems that humans face on a daily basis. Animal Farm was a great example of political satire. Orwell presents the necessary attitudes, wit and humor that can generally be seen as a mockery of certain political institutions. Orwell was effective in this satire because he said a lot with few words. The story seems to revolve around the principles of communism and our quest for power. Napoleon, for example, cannot resist the temptation or need to exert more power over the animals and, as a result, corruption and secrecy thrive under a tyrannical ruler in an autocratic state. The style is simple, almost like a fairy tale, and has been loved by children of all ages for its trickery and charm. Animal Farm' is quite simple in that in the first few chapters the reader immediately sees the need for action as the animals rebel and take over the farm. There must be a leader of the rebellion, so this role is given to two characters, Snowball and Napoleon. Napoleon wins the battle and Snowball is expelled from the community as Napoleon usurps power and establishes himself as the dictatorial leader of the farm and its inhabitants. Like the Nazis of the 1930s and 1940s, Napoleon shifted gears and finally declared a firm republic and therefore elected himself as interim president. Once in full power, his true reign of terror begins as he is often seen as nothing more than a human being..
