Effect of early androgen exposure on children's sexual toy preferencesVarious previous studies have found that girls and boys have different types of toy preferences that can be learned through modeling and reinforcement. There are also biological factors that influence the differences between girls and boys. Gonadal hormones strongly influence the development of sex differences in behavior and in the brain in different species of animals. There is a unique case where women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) – heavily exposed to adrenal androgens before birth – show more virile behavior and physical energy with higher spatial ability than normal women. Other results also show similar results caused by male hormones caused by maternal ingestion during pregnancy. In fact, there was already research on CAH girls and their behavior as children that was influenced by hormones, but some limitations were addressed: the assessment carried out in the studies was carried out. through interviews rather than objective observations; behavior was not viewed as a continuum; different sexual behaviors were treated as being poles apart from each other. Therefore, this research wanted to make more objective experiments. It focused on unbiased qualitative measures of sex toy preferences and a blinded rater. It was hypothesized that females with CAH would show a greater preference for boys' toys than their normal female relatives without CAH, and less preference for girls' toys. Meanwhile, there will be no difference in boys' CAH since previous studies on male animals showed no differences. Method Participants 26 girls and 11 boys with diagnosed CAH aged 3 to 8 years were recruited only in hospitals...... middle of paper ...... ace and not yet settled on certain toys. Further studies may also be needed to further explore the implication of early androgen exposure on lifespan. A longitudinal study of these children could be useful to see if they will continue to have the same characteristics and qualities as they age. It can also determine whether this masculinization is limited only to toy preferences or to other aspects of life such as choice of type of clothing, preferred hairstyles, manner of socializing, and gender identity. In conclusion, the hypothesis has been proven. CAH girls preferred boys' toys over girls' toys, which was in contrast to unaffected girls. Additionally, as suspected, there was no effect on the CAH boys. Although there are some limitations, this study was quite reliable and provided useful information for further studies that may improve and eliminate the limitations..
