    Dr. Thomas Stockmann: Hero or Enemy?Dr. Thomas Stockmann is the bath doctor in Henrik Iben's play “The Enemy of the People”; and the brother of the bourgmestre (mayor) of the city. Jovial in nature, the doctor enjoys the company of “brilliant, joyful and freedom-loving young people” who share his idealism and his ability to think freely. Throughout the play, Stockman is shown to be a conscientious person and a caring father. the strongest character in this play with the most powerful motivation, which is the truth and that only. Dr. Stockmann is determined to reveal to the public the health problems they are experiencing with contaminated baths, and he is sure they will thank him for it and name him a hero for caring for their well-being. The doctor is going to excessive lengths to make this known and he will not budge from his position to protect the general public, even if it is against the wishes of the mayor, his brother and the authorities. Will the truth triumph over lies and an individual’s desire to present themselves? facing corrupt bureaucrats? Stockmann courageously decides to fight but he does not realize the weight of the task he is undertaking. His discovery that could lead him to become the town's hero could just as easily make him the "enemy of the people", if he does. It was Dr. Stockmann who initially drew up the plans for the baths. When the mayor and the municipal council were involved, the doctor's plans were not followed and shortcuts were taken. that the baths and pipes are placed exactly in their current location. The doctor became suspicious of the baths' problems when he saw several sick patients. On his own initiative, he tests the water and discovers that the baths provide much of the water. the city's livelihood, are contaminated and have become a "plague hole", due to the poor location of the water pipes, addresses the mayor, who is also president of the baths committee. He reports the contamination and insists that the pipes be redone correctly. He threatens to have his article on the baths published in the local newspaper if a new correction is not made immediately. The mayor insists that it is out of the question to redo the pipes due to the expenses.
