"A proud man always looks down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you look down, you cannot see something that is above you " was stated by CS Lewis. Pride, excessive self-confidence, is a common problem in Greek myths. This usually comes from characters who do not recognize those superior to them, usually gods and goddesses. This is what happens in the stories of Daedalus and Icarus, Phaethon and Arachne. Characters let their pride get in the way of making the right choices. Excessive pride on the part of the characters of Daedalus and Icarus, Phaethon and Arachne has a negative impact on their choices. In the story Daedalus and Icarus, Icarus' pride causes his death and his father's grief. The story begins with King Minos requesting a palace and labyrinth from Daedalus, then holding him and his son as prisoners once the project is complete. Daedalus, being the great inventor that he is, sets to work on an escape plan. In the text it says: “Daedalus begged him to spare him a feather. Then every night, when everyone was in bed, Daedalus would work by candlelight on his greatest invention of all.” Daedalus creates two pairs of wings for Icarus and himself. Before leaving, he warns Icarus not to fly too close to the sun. When they escape, Icarus becomes very proud of the fact that he is the first boy to fly. "I'm the first boy to fly!...You think you're the tallest thing in the sky, don't you?" he mocked" was indicated in the text. This is where Icarus made his colossal mistake. He had mocked the sun, which was Apollo. The Greek gods and goddesses are the supreme beings of Greek mythology, mocking them was like condemning oneself to death and that is what Ica...... middle of paper ...... in the form of poor and humble people." Arachne had already done enough damage by openly saying that her skills were equal to, or better than, those of a goddess, but continuing to insult Athena by weaving such a pattern into her clothing was going too far. Arachne transforms into a spider and condemns her and her descendants to continue weaving. Humans will always be humans, there is no such thing as a perfect character. Humans today are still the same as they were thousands of years ago. have self-esteem, but too much is bad. Pride combined with arrogance can produce devastating results, as these three myths show. Characters let their pride keep them from listening to the words of the wise and lead them to make disastrous choices. Death was the ultimate consequence of the characters' choices.
