  • Essay / Genre as Genre - 862

According to Dictionary.com, genre is defined as “a class or category of artistic activity having a particular form, content, or technique.” Genre is a tool used to generate a clear idea of what a film is about. It helps producers create a plan to engage their target audience and ensure similarities in narrative elements. In Rick Altman's reading he says: "Stephen Neale expresses the commonly held view when he says that 'each new genre film constitutes an addition to an existing generic corpus and involves a selection from the repertoire of available generic elements at any time in the film. time’” (Altman 1999). This quote describes exactly what the romantic comedy genre is all about. The genre comes from two obvious sources, romance films and comedy films, and it takes elements from each genre to create a whole new version of the films. Romantic comedies are light, humorous and dramatic films that show that "true love" comes from human relationships in ordinary life. This genre has been popular with audiences since the early years of cinema because it allows people to believe that the relationships and situations depicted in these films could happen to them. He is also popular with producers because of his ability to build a film known to be a box office hit on a small budget. Rick Altman states: “Current understanding of genre depends on the assumption that generic terms and concepts are few, precise, and clear” (Altman 1999). The basic structure of these films first depicts the unfulfilled desire for love in the main characters' lives, then comes a situation they find themselves in that offers a chance for potential romance, and then, despite several obstacles, the protagonist realizes... .. middle of paper ...... that they are made for each other. In every film, there is usually an important "final gesture" scene to reveal the love they share. In The Proposal, this is shown when Bullock's character calls off the wedding and leaves Alaska. Reynolds then realizes that he is in love with her, which creates the final scene where he shows up in her office and proposes to her. The romantic comedy genre establishes a framework of generic conventions for each film. Although they generally have the construction, each film is developed in its own way. The funny, comedic and dramatic films follow the basic structure of the unfulfilled desire for love in the main characters' lives, a situation they find themselves in that offers a chance for a potential romance, and then, despite several obstacles, a realization that they fit together perfectly and live “happily ever after »”.
