  • Essay / Gun Control in America - 1914

One of the most controversial topics of the year is the gun debate and the government's attempt to ban and control certain weapons. This topic has always sparked disagreement among the American public, but it has recently become much more popular after several mass shootings, such as the infamous Sandy Hook. Although gun control seems to be the solution to these tragic events, controlling and banning guns simply will not work. Why doesn't this work and why is it so bad? Because it hasn't worked before, current gun control laws and attempted laws target the wrong guns, banning targeted guns or any gun for that matter will not prevent mass shootings, and it infringes on our constitutional rights as Americans. Together, we will not only solve these problems, but we will provide thoughtful answers to many of the arguments that gun control advocates can counter with. The first and simplest way to show that gun control won't work is to look to the past. Usually, people learn from their past mistakes and those of others throughout history. Unfortunately, American society has clearly shown a lack of development on this subject. If we look back a decade from now, we will have entered an era of gun control that our current government is working to restore once again. According to PolicyMic.com, the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994, or otherwise known as the Act of 1994 or The Crime Bill, was instituted on September 13, 1994. U.S. law banned or otherwise prohibited the production of semi-automatic firearms and ammunition feeding devices, more commonly known as magazines. This bill was later ruled unconstitutional in 2004, at a time of right-wing rule in government. Many people on the left and... middle of paper... right like Americans and this is a direct attack on our freedom. Perhaps one day the statistics will emerge and, after more trial and error, safer controls, such as background checks and mental stability checks, will be implemented to help prevent these disasters.
