  • Essay / Essay on moral relativism - 1332

Above all, it is important to remember that the premise of a moral relativist's argument rests on the principle "Different cultures have different moral codes", while the conclusion states that "good and evil are just one a matter of opinion, and opinions vary from culture to culture” (Rachels 141). Given this relativistic moral principle, I object to the argument that right and wrong are simply matters of opinion, because the mere fact of diversity does not imply truth. Rachels reinforces my assertion by stating: “The premise is about what people believe: in some societies, people believe one thing; in other societies, people believe differently. The conclusion, however, concerns what is actually the case” (Rachels 141). In other words, there are many beliefs that vary from culture to culture; However, there has to be some sort of definitive right or wrong answer to these questions.
