In 1976, five high school students filed a lawsuit against the local school board to challenge the school board's right to remove books from their school library. Book banning is a very controversial topic among many people. While some believe that banning books is the best way to protect children from inappropriate content, others believe that banning literature takes away a child's right to read. Book banning has been a problem since the invention of the printing press. One of the first well-known banned books was The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, which was first banned in 1850 for having inappropriate underlying themes in the story. To challenge the banning of books, Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 to celebrate the freedom to read, by banning books available in bookstores and public libraries. (“Banned Books Week”). The books are frequently challenged by parents and schools, but can be challenged by anyone who thinks a certain book could harm a child. Book banning has many pros and cons that make it a very debatable issue. There are many reasons behind the book ban and what it represents that argue for book censorship. One of the main benefits of banning books is that it protects children from inappropriate content. A book is generally prohibited because it contains elements deemed unsuitable for minors. Most parents and schools don't read the middle of the paper. Overall, the benefits of banning books do not outweigh the harms. However, there should be approved reading levels so that challenged books are not banned for everyone. One of the reasons why books should not be censored is that suppressing them takes away from the learning. When schools or school boards ban certain books, they deprive a minor of the chance to learn grammar and vocabulary, among other things, through writing and history. Second, there is no freedom to read when books are banned. A censored book prevents children from reading what they choose. Libraries are allowed to choose the books they have; therefore, students should be able to decide what they want to read. Giving minors the freedom to read allows them to learn to grow and accept different types of literature, regardless of their origin..
