  • Essay / Comparing Solomon and Gaeynor to Shakespeare's Romeo...

Solomon and Gaeynor is little more than another, more modern version of Romeo and July. The basic story of Solomon and Gaeynor is about a couple who fall deeply in love, but are faced with the problem that their families are very different and would never agree to a marriage between them. Similarly, in Romeo and July, a young couple falls desperately in love, but due to the argument between the two families, it is not possible for them to get married and live happily ever after. Solomon, a young Jewish man, meets a Welsh woman while going door to door selling fabric to make clothes. They fall in love in a short time, but Gaeynor does not know that Salomon is of Jewish origin. Likewise, her family does not know her Welsh lover. After meeting Gaeynor's family and being semi-accepted by them, Gaeynor becomes rather suspicious of the fact that he keeps their relationship so secret and has never introduced her to his family. In Romeo and July, a similar barrier stands between the two lovers. but in this case, both lovers knew about it. But the main difference is that in Romeo and July, the lovers are separated by a war that divides both families. In comparison, Solomon and Gaeynor are separated by the fact that they come from different religious backgrounds. Gaeynor is of Jewish descent and, as has often been the case throughout history, the Jewish people have been hated by the local population and blamed for their local responsibilities.... middle of paper ..... .meo and Julliet there was no baby which added to the confusion of the situation. However, in Solomon and Gaeynor, the latter becomes pregnant, which creates a stronger bond between the two lovers, while further complicating the situation. But in the end, these two couples suffered a very similar fate, and saw their love and feelings for each other repressed by society, and especially by family. Some subtle differences appear in the two stories, as well as a difference in place and time, but when we look at the basic structure of the two stories, we arrive at the same result. Two young people fall desperately in love, and it all ends in disaster, as one (or both) of them dies fighting for something their family hated them for..
