  • Essay / Hamlets Simulated Madness - 1488

In life, people are easily affected by what happens around them. Events around people can play with their emotions and the way they act. From a pleasant occasion to a terribly sad event, people act differently. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the main character, Hamlet, is completely melancholy, right? In this play, King Hamlet has died and as a result, his son, Hamlet, has entered into a sad state of mind. His parents are now worried about him and wondering how to release his grief. However, they seem to be pushing things to get worse. They later seem to believe that Hamlet has surpassed his grief and replaced it with utter madness. Now they decided to spy on him and send his friends from school to find out what's bothering him. He uses his intelligence to figure out why his friends randomly appeared in his castle. No one seems to understand why Hamlet is mad, other than the fact that his father is dead. However, the audience knows that Hamlet has seen his father's ghost. The ghost told Hamlet that he had been poisoned by his brother, King Claudius, and that he wanted Hamlet to avenge his death. The play is all about revenge, and Hamlet uses the madness he describes to achieve this goal. Throughout the play, his parents try to make Hamlet happy and return to his normal self. He uses this against them, in order to get closer to discovering evidence against King Claudius. “The play thing,” turns into all the evidence he needs. This is a popular phrase from Hamlet that clearly demonstrates his genius. His ingenuity proves that the King is guilty but in a discreet way. From now on, Hamlet just needs to find a chance to kill King Claudius. With this goal finally achieved... middle of paper ... in reality, he used it against King Claudius. Insanity is the state of mental illness, it can cause a person to behave ridiculously and be sad. Hamlet does a great job of pretending to be in this state of mind and simulating the entire audience and other characters. It takes a brilliant act to imitate madness and remain perfectly sane. It's fascinating to think that it can even be done, it takes a lot of courage, intelligence and wit to do it. Desperate times call for drastic measures and making people think you are crazy; it is putting one's life and reputation in danger. It's a courageous act and few people have the courage to try it. However, when a family is involved in a terrible situation, they should always do everything in their power to make things right. Even to the point of risking your own life, to protect or honor your loved ones.
