The story begins as a sixth grade girl, Miranda and her mother prepare for an appearance on the famous show $20,000 Pyramid. Stead describes the novel in which Miranda writes a letter to an anonymous "you." "You" sent her letters describing the game show and is able to predict Miranda's future. However, “You” remains a mystery to Miranda and us. Miranda spends her days in New York with her mother. A German lawyer named Richard is her mother's boyfriend who regularly visits Miranda and her mother in their apartment. Seeing that Miranda insists on taking away a copy of a novel called "A Wrinkle in Time", Miranda enjoys reading this novel. Belle's Market is a place where Miranda usually waits for her mother when she forgets to bring her apartment key. Belly is happy and excited to listen to Miranda's discussions about her novel. Aside from that, living in New York makes Miranda's mother anxious around a stranger. Therefore, she always reminds Miranda not to talk to a stranger. Fortunately, Sal has formed a valuable friendship with Sal, his best friend since childhood. At all times, they spend their days together and even go to the same school. Miranda and Sal regularly walk home together from school down West End Avenue to Broadway, a block from Broadway in Amsterdam, past the Laughing Man on the corner, then half a block houses to the door of their hall. On the way home, they usually encounter a homeless man called "the laughing man." The crazy-looking laughing man terrifies Miranda and Sal as they return from school. Even though they feel terrified, they act as if they aren't. Sleeping in her head under the mailbox near Miranda's apartment has...... middle of paper ......an angry man helps her by jumping in front of the truck and saves Sal. Unfortunately, the man who laughed died. After the accident, Miranda has the opportunity to talk with Sal and therefore discovers the reason why Sal no longer gets close to her. Sal wants Miranda to get along with her friends, just like Sal does. Finally, Miranda also realizes who is really sending her the notes, and it's the man laughing. The Laughing Man's Shoe is proof of this as Miranda discovers the last note in his shoe. Finally, the day his mother had been waiting for arrived. Her mother wins the $20,000 pyramid and uses the money to apply to law school. In the end, a light turns on in his head indicating that Marcus and the Laughing Man are the same person. In other words, the Man Who Laughs is the time-traveling adult version of Marcus. Therefore, Miranda will send the letter to Marcus.
