  • Essay / Unraveling "The Martian": Survival and Science

The Martian is about an astronaut named Mark Watney and his crew who land on Mars for a research project for NASA. Mark is a professional biologist and one of the best in the world working for NASA. When they landed on Mars, unfortunately, a massive wind storm formed, causing Mark to become separated from his crew. His electronic suit recognized that he was dead to his crew but he was still alive. As the windstorm rocked the space shuttle, the crew was forced to take off and leave Mark alone on Mars. Mark was now stranded and had to search for the space shuttle he and his crew were previously on, but was pushed several miles in a different direction. He only has 365 days of food and needs to last more than twice that. So he has to find a way to prepare food. Mark was the only crew member left so he had all their proportions of food to last him a while as well as all their gear and suits due to the emergency takeoff. He will need to repair and maintain parts like oxygen tanks or electrical boxes to stay alive, otherwise it could be fatal. Say no to plagiarism. Soon, Mark became a celebrity and all the news channels were talking about him. On top of all that, NASA was hatching a plan to save Mark, but it wasn't easy. Mark had to grow potatoes from soil samples and his own dung to make ends meet. He keeps daily diaries and shows the difficulties of living alone on Mars and the process until the end. When a few challenges hit Mark, like not being able to talk to his team anymore or when things go wrong. Japan had a meeting with NASA with a plan to bring Mark home much faster than they ever imagined in exchange for sending a Japanese astronaut into space. Will they follow through on this plan and bring Mark home or will they make their own plan and sabotage Mark's rescue? Will Mark be able to overcome these challenges and return to earth or will the loneliness and the unknown get to his head? Keep in mind: this is just a sample. I like how it's very realistic and it didn't leave you thinking that it wasn't good or that I think it's wrong. What I didn't like was that they skipped parts of the book and it wasn't really clear what happened in between. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves space or anything science related because this book talks a lot about science and how to put it into practice. I wouldn't share this book with someone who doesn't like slow books or very scientific novels. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and would definitely share it with someone to read..
