  • Essay / Analysis of Never Let Me Go - 726

It's difficult to summarize what makes a person human. We can agree that each of us is already human, physically speaking, but it is more than being physically human that counts. Never Let Me Go begins with Kathy, a seemingly normal woman in her thirties. She tells us about her job as a nurse, caregiver and companion of clones who have started organ donation. She feels a great sense of pride in her work and her skills as a caregiver. She is recognized for her success by her superiors in her work. She can choose who she gives her company to. She usually chooses clones of Hailsham as she also attended the same school as a child. Kathy tells us about her time in Hailsham and shares her most personal memories. She attended Hailsham with many other clones but she had two notable friends. Ruth was the "queen bee" of their group, a compulsive manipulative liar and Tommy a nice guy, but could have a bad temper. Kathy goes on to explain that Hailsham was crucially involved in creativity. Students displayed their creativity in many forms, writing poems or stories, making crafts or artistic drawings. This became important to them because of a woman named Madam, as she would come periodically and take the students' best artwork to a gallery unknown to the students at the school. Tommy was never a creative person, often bullied, and as a result showed his anger in tantrums. He has never brought any objects she made into the gallery and is ostracized by others because of it. This didn't bother Tommy for long, as a teacher named Miss Lucy informs Tommy that it's okay if he has trouble being creative. She told Tommy that it wouldn't matter anyway and this upset Kathy who...... middle of paper ...... agrees, and she says goodbye to Tommy as he is preparing to make his fourth donation. Kathy finishes her story and we learn that Kathy is about to make her first donation. She is happy and her nerves are collected. She finally gets a change to reflect on herself. She's only thought about it once before, when she cried at Tommy's grave in Norfolk. She hopes that one day, everything she holds dear will be returned to her, including Tommy. Throughout the novel, the author shows a lot of emotions and feelings between the characters, both positive and negative. The joy of the clones, the accomplishment through Kathy's pride in her work. They felt anger and jealousy because of Tommy's temper and Ruth's sabotage. They felt nostalgic when Kathy found her tape. They felt grief when Ruth and Tommy, and ultimately Kathy, died. It is more what is inside us, not outside, that defines us as human beings..
