  • Essay / Essence of Korean Studies at Our Local Universities

I think Korea needs no introduction. Friends who visited us say that their stay could only be likened to being in space. It's remarkably extraordinary. I look forward to proving the truth of this statement during my next visit. However, with my limited knowledge, the Korea I know is a resilient and self-reliant nation. It has gone through hardships to become the 12th largest trading nation and its influence is vast and far-reaching. In recent years, we have seen Korea emerge not only as an influential nation but also as a global superpower. Qualifying as a member of the G20 is no easy feat. In 2010, we saw the country host the G20 summit where leaders of the twenty most powerful nations converged in Seoul to discuss the future of the global economy. The country hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics, the 2002 World Cup, and is expected to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The introduction of Korean studies in our country's educational institutions is, in my opinion, opinion, long overdue. With the continuing influence of the Orient in Kenya and the rest of the continent, the introduction of Korean studies is vital and will play a key role in various sectors. Students who enroll in Korean Studies will have the opportunity to learn the Korean language, including the famous 24 consonant and vowel alphabet – Hangul. The course will give students an overview of Korean culture through its literature, music and art. In 2012, we saw Psy's song – Gangnam Style rule the airwaves and everyone was dancing to the tune, from presidents like Barack Obama to prime ministers like James Cameron. Not to be outdone, his compatriot Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the UN, also danced to this music. The idea behind this success was a Sou...... middle of paper......or advanced degree. If we have the opportunity to go to Korea, we will adapt quickly while avoiding culture shock. They will save a year of their life where they could have learned the new language and adapted to the new methods. To sum up, the introduction of Korean studies is an ingenious initiative that will not only open the doors to improving relations between Kenya and Korea. but will bring immense opportunities and help our citizens and young people see the world from a different perspective. This will bring about a paradigm shift away from the suffocation and excessive influence of the West and many young people, thanks to our universities, will have the opportunity to discover this new realm. This will bring diversity home through cultural exchange and help these two countries move forward together as we embrace the 21st century in style and hope to leave a positive mark..
