  • Essay / Selfish or Altruistic - 994

Many are able to accept or ignore the inequalities that exist in the world. They do not let strangers into their homes; don't imagine what would happen by sponsoring undocumented refugees, and above all, you couldn't cut off a foreigner's finger. Even if it's a little unsatisfying, most people won't make sacrifices that could interrupt their lives. Little Bee, by Chris Cleave, tells the story of a young girl who seeks refuge in England due to conflict in Nigeria. She is sent to a detention center where you either have to look good or speak well to survive. After 2 years, Little Bee is released and seeks help from Andrew and Sarah, a couple she met in Nigeria, in hopes of finding housing and receiving legal papers. However, as the story unfolds, each character is continually tested when help is not an option. Ultimately, each character's life is changed for better or worse. Little Bee depicts a world in which people are prepared and ready to lend a helping hand, even if they don't want to, to those in need. Some people choose to help others, even if they don't want to, purely for the intention of benefiting. Lawrence, who doesn't care about Little Bee at all, helps her by not reporting her to the police and having her kicked out because he wants to help Sarah so she can stay with him: "I wish I could make it disappear,” he said. “But I’m nobody. I'm just a civil servant. I won't tell the police about you. Not if you stay silent. But if you ever tell anyone about Sarah and me, or if you tell anyone about what happened with Andrew, I will put you on a plane to Nigeria, I swear. This will be the last thing I do before ending my life middle of paper......selling alone without anyone helping them. They both know that what they do can get them into trouble; however, their motivation to help those in need and do the right thing is much greater. Little Bee focuses on Little Bee's relationship, primarily with Sarah and Lawrence, but also with other characters. As the story unfolds, Little Bee touches each character's life and inspires them to change for the better. However, like any good book, each character must go through several obstacles. Although these obstacles become more difficult as the story progresses, each character changes and learns to help each other so that overcoming these complications becomes easier. Overall, Little Bee shows a world where people are there to help no matter the situation. Helping others is a way to make people's lives easier, but also to leave the person helping satisfied..
