  • Essay / The Crime Drama Genre - 1675

Joseph Straubhaar (2009) stated that television genres continue to develop over time in response to changes in audience tastes and original creative ideas. Indeed, television genres will continue to develop to meet public expectations and satisfaction. Crime drama series have become one of the most popular television genres in our society. It attracts audiences by discussing themes and issues related to current affairs and current events that viewers are aware of. Detective fiction includes various subgenres, including detective fiction such as Monk (2002–2009), in which a detective investigates and solves a crime. Additionally, Law & Order (1990-2010) represents the subgenres of legal thriller and courtroom dramas because these crime dramas focus more on the struggles of justice and deal with many criminals such as rapists, murderers, etc. defend the innocent. However, in this essay, I will analyze what is the enduring appeal of crime dramas to a television audience through an in-depth analysis of crime theory, narrative as well as the genre of the crime drama genre. I will illustrate my analysis with three detailed examples from Oz (1997-2003), 24 (2001-2010) and The Bill (1983-2010). Television has seen many producers, writers and viewers drawn to crime and deviance. The crime drama series is not an immutable structure but develops in a complex relationship with audiences, media institutions, social contexts and other genres.
