Over the past 50 years, technology has evolved in many different ways, from bulky to sleek cellular devices to the way people receive information and communicate. Technological changes play an important role in media and the way it is used. Technological changes throughout these periods have widely spread communication and media. The 1960s brought many changes to the way media was produced. The use of television in the 1960s played a very important role in media because this era was not only facing political changes, but also social, cultural and psychological changes. From civil rights issues to sectarian movements to student protests, Americans have faced many different situations that have affected their daily lives. Television news kept Americans informed of the many situations happening around the world. The largest and most frequently broadcast situation was the Vietnam War. As more news is covered on television, public perception has continued to improve. An important development made in television was the launch of the communications satellite known as Telstar 1, into space. It was the world's first international communications satellite and was launched into orbit on July 10 in collaboration with NASA and the Belle system. This satellite was called Telstar and allowed calls to be “forwarded” from a satellite to a switching station. Followed by the use of more satellites in 1962, news information from around the world was transmitted directly to a broadcast center. This made it possible to broadcast major world events in real time via television. Major events covered using television include the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963.
