MalariaMalaria is present in more than 100 countries. About half of the world's population is threatened. On November 6, 1880, Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran, a French army surgeon stationed in Constantine, Algeria, was the first to notice parasites in the blood of a malaria patient. He received the Nobel Prize in 1907 (Web). Malaria is an intermittent, remitting fever caused by a protozoan parasite that invades red blood cells. The causative agent is a parasite transmitted by mosquitoes in many tropical and subtropical regions. For these reasons, more information about the organism has been discovered. On August 20, 1897, Ronald Ross, a British officer in the Indian Medical Service, was also the first to demonstrate that malaria parasites could be transmitted from infected patients to mosquitoes. Ross showed that mosquitoes could transmit malaria parasites from bird to bird. The time interval during which the parasite has developed in the mosquito is called the sporogonic cycle. The problem of malaria transmission was thus solved and Ross was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1902 by the CDC. Although malaria is a deadly disease caused by a parasite that usually infects a certain type of mosquito that feeds on humans, its contact can be controlled. Since malaria is caused by a protozoan parasite that invades red blood cells, it could and does exist under certain favorable conditions where they occur. The parasites, which grow and develop inside the mosquito, need heat to complete their growth before they are mature enough to be transmitted to humans. Malaria is mainly found in warmer regions of the world, such as tropical and subtropical countries. The female Anopheles mosquito thrives well at higher temperatures. ...... middle of paper ......-Asian region” (Web). Working with key Roll Back Malaria (RBM) partners, such as the World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), World Bank and USAID, on programs to combat malaria. The CDC currently has staff stationed at UNICEF, the Global Health Group (University of California, San Francisco), as well as in 21 countries where malaria is endemic. The CDC's work covers policy development, program guidance, scientific research support, and monitoring and evaluation of progress toward RBM and PMI goals.CitationNordqvist, Christian. “What is malaria? » Medical news today.
