  • Essay / A Tramway Named Desire and Twelfth Night:...

Blanche is Stella's eccentric sister, she comes to the Champs Elysées to ask for help because she has gone through a traumatic period and has difficulty with whom she East. Malvolio has a typical brown nose, he will do anything to win the favor of Countess Olivia. However, these opposing characters explore the same themes. Through their roles in Twelfth Night and A Streetcar Named Desire, Malvolio and Blanche both experience unrequited love and downfall, but because sympathy is created for Blanche, the two characters have an opposite effect on the audience. Blanche's fall in A Streetcar Named Desire is extremely dramatic because during the play, tension rises and the audience understands that she is a victim of circumstances. Throughout the play, Blanche repeatedly hears Varsouviana Polka in her head, no one else can hear it. The Varsouviana Polka symbolizes Blanche's paranoia and guilt, the death of her husband was the instigator of her troubled path. But Banche can also feel guilty for her husband's death because the tone of the Varsouviana Polka suddenly rises when Blanche recounts that she told her husband that he disgusted her. The audience understands that she is still dealing with her past and sees it as justification for her selfish behavior. When Blanche was younger, she lost her husband to suicide and she lost Belle Reve because several loved ones died. All of this had a significant effect on Blanche as a person. She tried to be someone, she shouldn't hide the truth. The paper lantern symbolizes Blanche perfectly because Blanche - just like the paper around the lantern - is trying to obscure the truth, she doesn't want anyone to find out about her past. If we take into account Blanche's past, we can conclude that Blanche is a victim o...... middle of paper ...... and Blanche needs a shoulder to cry on. In other words, the audience thinks that Blanche deserves someone and this makes Blanche's unrequited love for her sister and Mitch extremely dramatic. Through their roles in Twelfth Night and A Streetcar Named Desire, Malvolio and Blanche both experience unrequited love and downfall, but because in A Streetcar Named Desire's sympathy is created for Blanche, the two characters have an opposite effect on the public. In conclusion, Malvolio's role in Twelfth Night is designed to show the audience how your behavior influences how people might think of you as a person. For the role of Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire, the audience knows more context so we feel sympathy for her and this justifies her behavior. However, both roles show how your behavior can influence how people think of you..
