  • Essay / Why Standardized Tests Are Not Truly Reliable Assessments

    Across the United States, standardized tests are a popular way educators use to measure a student's academic abilities. While it may seem like a good idea to give multiple students the same test and see how each one does, it's not that simple. The results do not represent a student's intelligence or potential to achieve great things in the real world. In taking a standardized test, a student may have a greater advantage over another for many reasons. Reasons that are not indicated in the standardized test results. There are many problems one may face when about to take a test, some students may "have something important that interferes with their ability to concentrate, may miss or not perform well" ( Baxter, Mella). No test result can show what this child has experienced, overcome or is going through at the time of testing. There is also no way to indicate how many hours each student has studied. Just because a student doesn't do well on a test should not predict their future. Tests were taken and the results were found to be biased toward students from wealthy areas, likely because they can afford more educational resources than students from poor areas. . “The private test prep market for the SAT and ACT is a $2 billion per year industry in the United States” (Westervelt, Eric). Families living in suburban neighborhoods generally have higher incomes than those living in urban neighborhoods, which allows them to have more resources. This is an unfair advantage because not all students are prepared to succeed. If everyone could afford a tutor, those who cannot would most likely have higher SAT and ACT scores.
