Gothic architecture is a form of architecture that reached its highest level during the medieval era. The history of Gothic architecture dates back to the 12th century. The Gothic style originated in France. It was originally called French style, but was later changed to Gothic style. The Gothic cathedrals of England are excellent examples of Gothic design. Among the best known are Canterbury Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. The term "Gothic" comes from the name of a barbarian tribe, the Goths, who controlled certain regions of Europe. The tribe was not known for its architectural achievements, but for its cruel and warlike nature. The name "Gothic" was later given to the style by those who believed that the designs and details represented the way groups governed. The history of Gothic architecture spans 300 years. Many unique design elements have evolved over time. Cathedrals (Myers 1) are some of the most stunning examples of Gothic architecture. Design is the most important aspect of Gothic architecture and is what makes it unique. It took many types of tools, materials, and craftsmen to create these giant structures. Gothic cathedrals were the most obvious sign of the wealth and power of the Catholic Church in medieval England. Famous cathedrals can be found in major cities such as Chichester, Lincoln and Worcester. The money to construct these buildings came from people making payments to the Catholic Church. Many competent and specialized people were needed. An architect had to be found to create the plans. Many types of craftsman were needed, such as a sculptor, blacksmith, glassmaker, stonemason, mortarman, carpenter, and roofer. Windows were seen as another way in which God was connected to the people (Martin 1). Stained glass windows can still be found in churches today. Interior design was another important element of Gothic architecture. All of these features were an important part of a Gothic cathedral. They could not have been created without the know-how of hundreds of men, their tools and their materials. Without the history of the Goths and the ways of the French, medieval design would not have spread to as many places as it did. All the design features worked together to create amazing structures that inspired people and brought them together in so many ways. These buildings still bring us together today, a thousand years later.
