Singapore was intended to be an impregnable naval base for the British Army, but it was also vital to Australia's security as it served as a first line of defense. On February 3, the Japanese began attacking Singapore with air attacks. Britain responded to the attack using coastal guns on the island, but proved ineffective against the aircraft. On February 8, the first Japanese landings began on the northwest coast of Singapore. The Japanese were met by the Australians but were forced to retreat around midnight.
