  • Essay / One Hour Story by Kate Chopin - 1023

In each story there were a variety of things that we read that we don't completely understand. We may notice that there are certain things that happen for which there is no real explanation. There are objects, colors or characters that are introduced and it is up to us to give them meaning. In other words, people were commonly introduced to symbolism without even questioning it. The author gives something a meaning or idea that connects to another character or to ourselves, giving everyday objects greater and deeper meanings than they normally are. In the short story titled “The Story of an Hour” we can see that a woman, Mrs. Mallard lost her husband in a train disaster. Due to his sick heart, it was difficult for his sister Joséphine who broke the news to him. After crying in her sister's arms, Mrs. Mellard went to her room, sitting comfortably in her chair, exhausted by an open window. The scenery was beautiful with blowing winds, blue clouds rising from a storm, and singing birds singing. While being alone, she kept repeating that she was free. She never said what, but her heart was beating faster and she finally felt warm and relaxed all around her body and for a brief moment she had a feeling of enlightenment. At that moment, she realized that she was free from all the responsibilities she had from her husband and that she could now be a self-help, happy, single woman. Meanwhile, her sister Josephine comes in and tells her she's going to get sick and needs to stop. Mrs. Mallard replied that she would not but would drink an elixir of life which came in through the window. Mrs. Mallard saw a new and bright future awaiting her and was happy with the new results and felt victorious....... middle of paper ...... also died with all her hopes and dreams that she had during this time. Overall, the story has had profoundly inspiring effects that many of us would not think of when possible. We can now see things from a new perspective and try to understand what it means to someone rather than what it actually means. With this story, the experience was that of a broken woman finally finding happiness with the death of someone she was supposed to love. This is not always the case in many stories, but in this one it makes perfect sense, the woman develops something that is interpreted as a new life and a new freedom. The woman is already free, but now her mind is free so that she can do whatever she feels is right and for her. With the help of the things around her, we can understand what hurts her and create a story different from the one we read..
