  • Essay / An Event at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce

Dream and reality. The short story “An Event at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce illustrates the idea of dreams versus reality. A dream is a belief that comes from the deepest level of your mind. Is based on ideas, emotions and sensations that are sometimes linked to our real life or simply to a fantasy. Reality is a succession of events that exist. The news begins by arousing curiosity with the revelation that a man will be hanged on the Owl Creek Bridge. At this point, the reader does not know the reasons why this man will be condemned. In the second section the name of the man who will be hanged is mentioned, the motives for his crime and the manner in which he was captured. The final section illustrates the struggle that Peyton Farquhar was facing and the events that went through your mind at that time. He imagined/dreamed that he was running away and returning peacefully to their home. But the reality is different and his life ends in darkness and silence. (Bierce 201-209)Ambrose BierceAmbrose Bierce was born on a farm (at Horse Cave Creek), in Meigs County, Ohio and raised in Kosciusko County, Indiana. In 1859, Bierce entered the Kentucky Military Academy, where his stay was cut short prematurely due to an accident, supposedly intentional, which ended up burning down the establishment. At the start of the American Civil War, on April 19, 1861, Bierce enlisted in the 9th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was promoted to captain. Having become a lawyer a few days later, in January 1865, he obtained a promotion to the rank of commander. After that, he became known as a journalist, he collaborated with The Argonaut, The Overland Monthly and New Letters, and he was chosen as editor in 1868. In October 1913, Bie...... middle of paper .... .. They are still dreaming. Once people start to notice irregularities and realize they are dreaming, "at this point many people try to panic, others who already experience lucid dreaming may continue the dream." (McNamara 1-2). In the short story “An Event at Owl Creek Bridge,” the idea of dream and reality is illustrated in a different way. Peyton Farquhar has a dream in the last minutes of his life. At that moment, he sees himself escaping death, but he cannot avoid reality. (Bierce 203)Works CitedBierce, Ambrose. “Sundance Reader” n/ed. Mason, Ohio, 2009. Print.
