Introduction: This report aims to determine whether Australia is doing enough to prevent youth suicide, by providing facts and opinions on the issue, as well as explaining how the problem has affected society. Additionally, the report also identifies the participants involved in the problem and how they react to the problem.2. The problem and context of the debate It is reported that each year there are more than 2,000 cases of self-destruction in Australia (Gillard 2013). It is worth noting that in 2008, at least 281 Australians committed suicide, aged between just fifteen and twenty-four (Suicide Prevention Australia 2014). The debate over whether Australia is doing enough to prevent youth suicide has arisen from many concerns. Recent programs and articles have reported numerous cases of youth suicide in Australia since 2013. The two significant triggers were the tragic suicides of three high school students in Geelong. , Victoria in mid-2009 (Best 2013) and the death of 15-year-old Tyler Cassidy in 2008 (Stark 2013). The debate has also started because there is a clear increase in suicide among young people, a third of whom are Indigenous (Parke 2014), and because of the widespread debate about suicide in social media (Best 2013). The debate aims to halve the rate of self-destruction in Australia over the next ten years (Donovan 2013).3. The social importance of the issueThe increase in suicide among young people worries society in general.
