    The role of social networks has become very important in society. Millions of people log into their Facebook and Twitter accounts every day. Even though their popularity is skyrocketing, the increased role of social media is not necessarily a positive quality. Many negative effects are known when using social networking sites. The effects range from small problems to much larger consequences. Although the positive uses of social media are present, the negative aspects that occur simply cannot be ignored. As social media grows in popularity, more and more people are joining these websites. Ian Daly says, “Of course, it's hard to resist the allure of a site that everyone with access to the Internet seems to have embraced with open arms” (Daly 481). People, especially teenagers, are quick to take to social networking sites because it's a cool thing to do. Teenagers often turn to these websites to satisfy their desperate need to fit in, because no one wants to be labeled a loser. Many teenagers feel the need to make hundreds of friends and follow them on Facebook and Twitter to assert their popularity. From the most popular kids at school to the least popular, most teens use social media to communicate with each other outside of school. Teenagers who are connected to social networking sites often ridicule those who are not. For example, teenagers who are not on Facebook or Twitter are generally treated as social outcasts. Social media has also made it easier to gossip about teenagers who are not online. Thus, encouraging adolescents to conform to the normality of social networks, otherwise they will suffer the consequences. Inevitably, some of these people have malicious and harmful intentions. Hackers start spreading these viruses by taking over someone's social media page and sending links to all of the victims' friends. The links often include grotesque images of dead animals and pornographic content. Every time someone clicks on one of the sent links, they activate the virus and essentially give the hacker access to their account. The hacker then repeats the steps followed to access the page they break into. Thus, creating a cycle of viruses that can affect the computer or device used to open the link. These security issues have significant consequences and have yet to be fully fixed. The negative consequences that social media is linked to can no longer be ignored..
