The romanticized view of Gothic literature has influenced many people with its dark atmosphere of metaphorical elements. Gothic literature, also known as gothic horror, combines elements of horror, romance, and supernatural events. The beginnings of Gothic literature began in the 18th century "in the medieval era" where it was "a strong source of inspiration", which influenced many authors in setting choices such as the use of castles and monasteries. Horace Walpole, author of The Castle of Otranto, is known for being the first author of a Gothic novel to "use the styles and design of medieval Gothic architecture" (Lad 1). Differentiating itself from other genres of novels, the Gothic novel expresses emotions of isolation, fear, despair and suspense. Authors Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and HP Lovecraft displayed these dark elements through their writings and had an impact on historical literature (Lad 1). Edgar Allan Poe, "the inventor of the genre of detective fiction", became a famous American Gothic writer of stories. including The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart and many more. Poe “was the first well-known American writer to attempt to make a living by writing alone, which led to a financially difficult life and career” (“The Biography of Edgar Allan Poe” 1). As a literary critic and editor, he "focused his criticism on the specifics of style and construction." His writing consisted of many malicious and dark subjects "demonstrating a brilliant mastery of language and technique as well as an inspired and original imagination" in his stories ("Edgar Allan Poe" 1). The Raven, one of Poe's most famous poems, tells the story of a raven who haunts a grieving lover. The dark and mysterious tone of Gothic literature changed history thanks to American authors Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and HP Lovecraft. Edgar Allan Poe invented the genre of detective fiction by using words to express emotions of fear and mystery. Using allegorical and moral messages, Nathaniel Hawthorne taught the themes of human sins and isolation through his novels. HP Lovecraft introduced the concept of supernatural creatures and fictional ideas, changing the history of horror stories. Of these authors, they have greatly marked and influenced not only the history of writing but also many authors of our generations..
